It appears that fraudulent and dangerous virus-carrying emails are on the rise, possibly a sort of devious New Year's Resolution. We at Permutation have a "catcher" that logs each virus laden email sent to us. As I write this, more have arrived in the past two days than in the past three months..

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
For
the most part, just viewing an email will not expose your computer to
harm. From a virus standpoint, you need to OPEN or RUN something
contained within the email before it can do, well, anything.
Remember the advice given to children, "Never talk to strangers." By that, we mean that you should avoid double-clicking on attachements within an email from someone that you do not know.
As well, some virus distributors can be sly. Their emails either pretend to be someone else (a method called spoofing)
or, once they infect a poor soul's computer, they automatically send
themselves to every contact in that person's email program, often
featuring a catchy Subject line, like, "You've got to check this out."
Professional antivirus software packages often feature email and download
scanners. They too can help, moving suspect emails to a "Quarantine"
folder for futher consideration or deletion.
If you are interested in having such software installed or fear you may already be infected, take a look here to see what Permutation can do for you.
Remember,
email is an extremely useful method for staying in touch with friends,
family and business associates. Use it wisely and carefully, and you're
unlikely to ever have a problem. However if you do, Permutation can help.
